Matteo Berrettini defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-0 6-0 on the clay courts of Monte Carlo in 49 minutes, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Masters 1000 tournament.

The result marked the first time in Medvedev's career that the Russian, currently ranked 10th in the ATP, has lost a match by double bagel. Berrettini, competing in what he described as one of his best career performances, did not allow his opponent to win a single game.

Medvedev, a former world number one, struggled from the opening set. The first set concluded in less than 30 minutes with a 6-0 scoreline. In the second set, after falling behind 0-2, Medvedev destroyed his racket on court, an action the umpire observed but allowed given the circumstances.

Berrettini said after the match that he made only three errors against what he called a difficult opponent. He acknowledged that he did not expect to win so decisively. "It is definitely one of the best performances of my career," Berrettini stated. "I struggled only in the first game, but I didn't expect it to go this way. I just tried to maintain concentration."

The Italian noted that he saved two break points in the opening game before feeling his play improve. "After the first game where I saved two break points, I felt I was playing better and better," he said. "There was a risk of losing concentration and I knew everything could change in a couple of points, so I continued to push."

Berrettini explained his tactical approach, saying his weapons functioned effectively throughout the match. "My arms worked and I maintained high concentration because I know tennis is a strange sport and things can change quickly," he added.

The victory came during a comeback period for Berrettini following a series of injuries. Had he lost, he would have dropped to 105th in the ATP rankings. The win secured his place in the round of 16 at Monte Carlo.

Medvedev committed 27 unforced errors during the match, according to reports. At 30 years old, the loss represented a rare occurrence for a player accustomed to competing at the highest levels of professional tennis.
