German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen will undergo surgery Friday for a left hamstring injury sustained during Girona's LaLiga match against Real Oviedo, the club announced Wednesday.
Girona confirmed that the recovery timeline will be determined following the surgical procedure. The injury occurred during the match in Asturias, where Girona lost 1-0 to the league's bottom-placed side.
Ter Stegen, on loan from Barcelona through the end of the season, had made only two official appearances for Girona since his arrival during the winter transfer window. He made his debut in a 1-1 draw against Getafe at Montilivi before starting against Oviedo, where he completed the full 90 minutes despite the injury.
The 32-year-old had missed a significant portion of the first half of the season due to a back injury, which prompted his temporary departure from Barcelona. His loan move to Girona was intended to provide him with regular playing time as he worked toward regaining match fitness.
The hamstring injury comes at a sensitive time, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup scheduled later this year. Ter Stegen's recovery timeline will determine his availability for Germany's World Cup campaign.
