Democratic socialist Angie Nixon wins Florida Senate primary

Angie Nixon, a Florida state representative and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, won the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate on Tuesday, defeating former national security official Alexander Vindman in a significant upset.

Nixon secured 56.1% of the vote to Vindman's 43.9%, according to the Associated Press. The result was particularly notable given the substantial financial disparity between the candidates. Nixon had $975,000 in campaign funds at the end of July, compared to Vindman's $16.3 million, according to Florida Politics.

Vindman, who served on the National Security Council, gained national prominence in 2019 when he testified before Congress during President Donald Trump's first impeachment. His candidacy represented the Democratic establishment's preferred choice in the race, making Nixon's victory a rejection of the party's institutional backing.

The primary was held Tuesday, August 18, as part of Florida's first elections conducted under the state's newly redrawn congressional map. Observers noted the redistricting was designed to favor Republicans and could result in Democrats holding a minimal number of Florida's 28 House seats.

Nixon will advance to face Republican Ashley Moody in the November general election. The Florida Senate race is among Democrats' best opportunities to pick up seats needed to gain control of the 100-seat chamber. Democrats need to win four seats to secure a majority in the midterm election.
