Family of Renee Good sues Trump administration over fatal ICE shooting

The family of Renee Good filed civil lawsuits Thursday against the Trump administration, current and former federal officials, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in connection with her fatal shooting in Minneapolis on January 7.

Good, 37, was shot three times by an ICE agent while sitting in her car. The lawsuits were filed by her brother Brent Ganger and her wife Becca Good. The Chicago-based law firm Romanucci & Blandin announced the pair of civil actions nearly nine months after the shooting.

The complaints allege assault, battery, false imprisonment, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and negligence that resulted in Good's death. The lawsuit also alleges "federal conspiracy with discriminatory design and authorized use of force against observers," claiming that "extreme and unconstitutional force" was exerted against "people exercising their rights under the [U.S.] constitution."

Good was unarmed at the time of the shooting. She and her wife had been participating in daily protests in Minneapolis against the deployment of armed federal agents sent to Minnesota to arrest and identify undocumented migrants for deportation. The agents were often masked during operations.

The shooting sparked nationwide protests against the Trump administration's expanded immigration enforcement efforts. Three weeks after Good's death, another U.S. citizen, Alex Pretti, was shot by ICE agents, also in Minneapolis.

Antonio Romanucci, founding partner of the law firm, said in a statement: "Today, these lawsuits are the beginning of the ultimate legal weapon in uncovering the truth behind this unlawful use of deadly force and the nefarious conspiracies behind the invasion of American cities by American law enforcement officers."
