The New York Post obtained exclusive photographs documenting the severe conditions in which 16 children were confined in a house in Ohio, authorities said. The images show extensive accumulation of garbage throughout the residence, discarded boxes, moldy clothing, and plastic containers scattered across dirty floors.
The children were found locked in a 4-by-4 room where they had been held for approximately four years in what authorities described as deplorable conditions. Officials characterized the children as being in a "wild" state and surrounded by excrement.
The case came to public attention just over a week ago when authorities discovered the confinement situation. The mother, her partner, and the grandparents were involved in keeping the minors in these conditions, according to officials.
Photographs obtained by the outlet show the basement area where conditions were particularly severe. The accumulation of waste and deteriorated living conditions were documented in the images released by the news organization.
The father of the children was wanted for what authorities described as perverted behavior at the time the 16 children were discovered, according to reporting on the case.
Several of the children were reported to be in serious condition when discovered, authorities said.
