Police rescue more than 30 cats from abandoned boat in Washington

Police in Tacoma, Washington, rescued more than 30 cats from an abandoned boat near Owen Beach after receiving a report on August 6. The Marine Services Unit of the Tacoma Police Department responded to the call and discovered the vessel occupied by numerous felines living in unsafe conditions.

Upon arrival, officers found the cats scattered throughout the boat. Many of the animals were frightened and malnourished, according to authorities. The rescue operation required coordination between the Marine Services Unit, Animal Control, and forensic technicians to safely remove the animals from the vessel.

The operation extended into the following day as crews worked to extract all the cats from the boat. John Correa, the public information officer for the Tacoma Police Department, described the scene in an interview with local television. "The best way to describe it is that it looked like a Studio Ghibli film," Correa said, referring to the Japanese animation studio known for films such as "Spirited Away" and "Princess Mononoke." He added that the cats appeared to have made the boat their home, moving freely throughout the vessel.

All rescued cats were transported to the Tacoma-Pierce County Humane Society. The Marine Services Unit located information about the boat's owner but was unable to reach him, Correa said. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

Police disclosed details of the rescue operation to the public after residents spotted the unusual law-enforcement activity on the water. An investigation into how the cats came to be aboard the abandoned boat remains ongoing. Authorities stated that their immediate priority was ensuring every cat was safely removed from the vessel.
