President Donald Trump said Thursday he did not regret going to war against Iran despite the potential impact the conflict may have on the November US midterm elections.
In an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham on "The Ingraham Angle," Trump was asked whether he regretted the Iran war due to its possible effect on the elections. "I don't believe in the word 'regret.' You can always question yourself a little bit," Trump said. "If I had it to do again, I would do exactly as I did."
Trump dismissed suggestions that some of his supporters were upset and demoralised about the war. "I don't think they're demoralised. I think they're very proud of the fact that I'm not letting Iran have a nuclear weapon," he said.
The president reiterated his expectation that the war will end immediately after the midterm election. "It ends right after the election," Trump said in the interview.
The comments come as Washington has renewed attacks against Tehran, with the Islamic Republic retaliating by launching strikes across US bases in the Middle East. The ongoing hostilities have contributed to rising oil prices, with Brent crude surging near $108 a barrel after fighting between Yemen-based Houthi militants and Saudi-backed forces intensified, stoking fears of deeper supply disruptions across the region.
Rising oil and gas prices have continued to be a concern among Republicans during the election cycle.
