The U.S. House of Representatives will vote next week on a Russia sanctions bill that the Senate approved in August, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke to Bloomberg.
The bill, co-authored by late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democrat Richard Blumenthal, proposes punitive tariffs targeting countries that import Russian energy resources. The Senate passed the measure August 7 with 86 votes in favor.
The House will consider the bill under a procedure requiring only a simple majority for passage, the informed source said.
Estonia's Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna expressed support for the measure on social media platform X, stating that his country firmly backs additional sanctions against Russia. "We highly appreciate the efforts of the U.S. Congress and hope that the Russia sanctions bill will be adopted into law," Tsahkna said.
The bill has faced growing resistance in the House of Representatives, with some lawmakers expressing concerns that the measure would expand executive powers. Media reports have indicated the legislation may be blocked at least until the November congressional elections.
