British police said Friday they are investigating former Prince Andrew over a sexual assault allegation, expanding an inquiry that initially focused on misconduct in public office.
Thames Valley Police said it is examining a report that a woman was taken to an address in Windsor in 2010 for sexual purposes. The force said it has made contact with the woman's lawyer and offered to take her statement under conditions of full confidentiality.
The investigation, which began after Andrew's arrest and questioning in February, now encompasses fraud and sexual offences in addition to the original misconduct charge, police said. Andrew, 66, was detained and questioned in February following new revelations about his links to American financier Jeffrey Epstein, who died in prison in 2019.
Police said a team of experienced detectives is working methodically through a significant amount of information received from the public and other sources. The force appealed for any survivors or witnesses connected to Epstein's network in the United Kingdom to come forward and share information.
Andrew served as Britain's special trade envoy between 2001 and 2011. The initial investigation examined whether he engaged in misconduct while holding that public position.
Police said that if the woman wishes to report the alleged incident, her complaint will be taken seriously and handled with care, sensitivity, and respect for her privacy and right to anonymity.
The investigation comes as Andrew's ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, is negotiating a royal pension in exchange for not speaking publicly about the matter in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, according to reports. Ferguson is said to be living in homes of wealthy friends in Switzerland, Ireland, and the Middle East.
