An explosion at the port of Rotterdam killed one person and injured several others, authorities said. The incident occurred around 11:30 at a facility operated by Gunvor Energy Rotterdam, located in Europoort, one of the world's largest chemical and petrochemical industrial zones.
The explosion took place at a site where the energy company was conducting repair work on pipelines, according to reports. Rotterdam police confirmed the fatality and multiple injuries, citing information from regional media outlets.
Gunvor Energy Rotterdam is a subsidiary of the Swiss-based Gunvor Group. The company stated it was cooperating with authorities following the incident.
Emergency services responded quickly to the scene. Multiple ambulances and a medical helicopter were dispatched to the location shortly after the explosion, according to regional media reports.
An investigation was opened to determine the cause of the explosion. Police said they were working to establish the circumstances that led to the incident at the Europoort facility.
