Al Jazeera journalist Mohammed Wishah has been killed in an Israeli drone strike in the Gaza Strip. Wishah, a correspondent for Al Jazeera Mubasher, was struck Wednesday while travelling in a car on al-Rashid Street, the coastal road running west of Gaza City. The drone attack caused the vehicle to burst into flames, according to sources.
Wishah had worked for Al Jazeera's Mubasher channel since 2018. Al Jazeera Media Network said in a statement that it "strongly condemns the heinous crime of targeting and killing" the journalist.
The Gaza Government Media Office said at least 262 journalists have been killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza since the beginning of military operations in October 2023.
The Israeli military did not issue an official statement regarding Wishah's death. However, Avichay Adraee, the Arabic-language spokesperson for the Israeli Defense Forces, commented on the incident via social media platform X. Adraee stated that Wishah was "not a journalist, but a Hamas terrorist in every sense of the word." The spokesperson released images from the past that he said showed Wishah holding a weapon.
Israel has been targeting journalists in the Gaza Strip since October 2023, according to Al Jazeera. A January 2026 report by the Committee to Protect Journalists documented increasing use of drones in attacks against media professionals. The organization recorded 39 such incidents throughout 2025, with 28 attributed to the Israeli government in Gaza and five attributed to the Rapid Support Forces, a paramilitary group involved in conflict in Sudan.
