Violence erupted in eastern India after the discovery of an 11- or 12-year-old girl's body in a lake near Kolkata, West Bengal, on Sunday. The girl had been raped and killed, then placed in a sack in the water.

The discovery sparked widespread outrage and protests. During demonstrations that followed, a mob beat a 26-year-old man to death, believing him to be responsible for the crime. Police also killed the main suspect in the case.

Hundreds of people took to the streets demanding greater government protection for women. The protests reflected broader concerns about sexual violence in India, where rape has been a significant issue in recent elections.

Suvendu Adhikari, chief minister of West Bengal, acknowledged the violence during the unrest. "He too will get justice," Adhikari said of the man killed by the mob. Authorities identified approximately 200 people responsible for damaging police vehicles and vandalizing railway lines during the protests.
