Russia launched a sustained mass attack on Kyiv on Wednesday using drones and ballistic missiles, striking multiple districts across the Ukrainian capital in daylight hours as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Two people were killed and between 23 and 43 others were wounded in the assault, according to Ukrainian authorities. The discrepancy in casualty figures reflects ongoing assessments, with later reports indicating six people wounded, four hospitalized and two in serious condition.
Russian air forces launched hypersonic and ballistic missiles from Kursk, Bryansk, and Voronezh regions, according to Ukrainian air force statements. The attack proceeded in multiple waves throughout the day, with strikes extending from overnight through afternoon hours. Columns of black smoke rose above sections of the city as buildings and infrastructure sustained direct hits across the Dniprovsky, Darnitsky, and Podilsky districts.
Commercial buildings, warehouses, and gas stations were among the targets struck. A nine-story residential building sustained a direct drone hit, while debris from missiles fell into a private residence courtyard in the Dniprovsky district and onto a roadway in the Darnitsky area. A fire broke out at a historic building that formerly housed a railway market near the main railway station, and railway infrastructure sustained damage. A maternity hospital in the Podilsky district was affected when missile debris fell nearby.
The timing of the attack coincided with Zelenskyy's diplomatic efforts to secure continued international support for Ukraine's defense. In his address to the General Assembly on Wednesday, Zelenskyy urged world leaders to maintain pressure on Russia's economy, stating that limiting Russian oil revenues was essential to constraining the war effort. "When someone gives Russia more money through trade, they give this war more time," he said in English, calling for sustained restrictions on trade with Russia.
Zelenskyy had met with U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday as part of his push to maintain American backing. He was also scheduled to hold talks with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and met with European leaders during his UN visit.
Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov addressed the UN Security Council on Wednesday, stating that Russia is prepared to negotiate toward a lasting peace but will not accept a simple "pause" in hostilities. Lavrov argued that such a pause would allow Ukraine and its supporters time to acquire additional weapons. Russia is scheduled to address the General Assembly on Saturday.
The attack represented the latest in what have been daily Russian drone operations targeting Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure.
