Russian forces conducted drone strikes Sunday against targets in western Ukraine near the Polish border, including a truck and a passenger train, according to Polish and Ukrainian authorities.
A Russian drone struck approximately 800 meters from the Jagodyn-Dorohusk border crossing between Ukraine and Poland. The attack ignited a fire at a gas station and damaged several trucks in the area. Polish border guard officials said the crossing was temporarily closed following the strike but operations resumed later.
A train traveling toward Poland was also targeted by a drone. The train, which carried approximately 200 passengers, was struck but sustained no casualties, according to reports. Several trains near the border, roughly two kilometers away, required evacuation as a precaution.
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna announced on social media that members of his delegation became stranded at the Jagodyn-Dorohusk crossing and were unable to leave Ukraine due to the drone threat. He stated that his team had been "stuck" at the border crossing and "unable to leave Ukraine because of the drone threat."
The Russian Defense Ministry said it had targeted infrastructure in western Ukraine used for military transport from Europe. Ukraine depends on trade and weapons deliveries through its borders with Poland, Romania, and Moldova.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiga characterized the strikes as an escalation, stating on social media that Russia's "barbaric strikes" at the Ukraine-Poland border represent an attack on the state border itself. He said the strikes indicate that "Putin's terror is now knocking directly at the door of the EU and NATO."
Russian military operations in recent weeks have increasingly focused on Ukrainian border crossings with Western allies. Polish border guard officials confirmed to Reuters that the attack site was 800 meters from Polish territory.
