A major Russian aerial assault on Kyiv overnight killed at least eight people, including a 13-year-old girl, and injured dozens of others, Ukrainian officials said Thursday.

The strike destroyed a nine-story residential building in Kyiv's Darnytskyi district. Rescue workers recovered multiple bodies from beneath the rubble, including a 21-year-old man, a 30-year-old man, and an unidentified woman. A 12-year-old girl was found dead in a nearby house that had been destroyed in the attack.

Search and rescue operations continued at the site of the destroyed residential building. More than 170 emergency workers and over 50 units of equipment, including engineering machinery for clearing debris, were deployed to the area. Canine search teams inspected 2,300 square meters of the site. Rescuers removed 400 cubic meters of rubble and damaged building materials. More than 10 people were reported missing and feared buried in the rubble.

According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, approximately 40 people were injured in Kyiv as a result of the attack, with an additional seven injured in the Kyiv region. Twenty-eight people were injured in Kharkiv, and two in the Odesa region. A 1-month-old baby was among those hurt in the strikes.

The attack damaged 180 sites across the country, including more than 50 ordinary residential buildings. The strike destroyed 17 apartment buildings in addition to the nine-story residential block in the Darnytskyi district.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a major operation involving 600 Kyiv police and rescue workers recovered bodies from the destroyed building. Dozens of residents were rescued from the structure, but rescue units, including specialist dog units, continued searching for those feared trapped in the rubble.

Psychologists from the State Emergency Service and the National Police were working with people in need of psychological assistance following the attack.

City Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko said the death toll reflected Russia's targeting of the civilian population. Search and rescue operations remained ongoing as of Thursday afternoon.
