A student who was hospitalized in critical condition following a knife attack at an elementary school in northern Slovakia on Tuesday has died, authorities said Thursday.

Slovak Parliament Speaker Richard Raši announced the death in the chamber, where lawmakers observed a moment of silence for the girl. The attack also claimed the life of a teacher, bringing the total death toll to two.

Police detained a 13-year-old student from the school in connection with the knife attack. The boy remains in custody as authorities investigate the incident.

The attack occurred at the elementary school in the northern region of Slovakia. Medical personnel were unable to save the student despite her hospitalization in very serious condition.
