An eighth-grade student opened fire at a middle school in south-central Turkey on Wednesday, killing four people and wounding at least 20 others, authorities said. The attack marked the country's second school shooting in as many days.
The attacker, approximately 13 years old, brought guns to the school in his backpack that officials believe belonged to his father. According to Kahramanmaras province governor Mukerrem Unluer, the student entered two classrooms and opened fire at random.
Three students and one teacher were killed in the attack. Four of the wounded were in serious condition and undergoing surgery, Unluer said.
The attacker was also found dead. "He shot himself. It is not yet clear whether this was suicide or happened amid the chaos," Unluer told reporters.
The student was the son of a former police officer and was carrying five guns and seven magazines, according to the governor. "We suspect he may have taken his father's weapons," Unluer said.
The shooting came one day after a former student opened fire at a high school in Sanliurfa province in the southeast on Tuesday. That attacker wounded 16 people before killing himself in a confrontation with police.
