A student at a high school in Zagreb, Croatia, stabbed and wounded another student and a janitor on Friday, authorities said. The attacker was detained by police.
The incident occurred around 8 a.m. at a school building in the capital. Croatia's Ministry of Education said the attacker used a "sharp object" in the assault. Police were dispatched to the scene after receiving a report and launched an investigation.
The student who was attacked underwent surgery for multiple stab wounds but was out of danger, authorities said. The school employee suffered face injuries. Both victims received medical attention and were in stable condition with vital signs preserved, according to officials.
According to unofficial information, both the attacker and the injured student were 15 years old. One news portal reported the attacker wore a ski mask covering his head and face during the assault.
The Index news portal reported that the attack followed a falling-out between the students on Thursday. Videos from the scene showed the building cordoned off during the police investigation.
The school building houses two schools and one college. A teacher locked a classroom during the incident, according to reports. Police conducted an on-site investigation and a criminal investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.
In December 2024, a knife-wielding former student entered a school in Zagreb and stabbed a 7-year-old girl to death, wounding three more children and their teacher. That attacker was convicted and sentenced to 50 years in prison. Following that incident, schools in Zagreb and elsewhere hired guards to prevent unauthorized access to buildings.
