The crash occurred late Monday night at Bekasi Timur Station, approximately 25 kilometers from Jakarta, when a long-distance train struck a stationary commuter train on the same track. Bekasi city adjoins Jakarta and is home to the rail station where the collision took place.
Anna Purba, a spokesperson for state-owned railway operator KAI, confirmed the death toll at seven with 81 injured. The commuter line operator's spokesperson, Karina Amanda, told Reuters that the collision involved a commuter line train and a long-distance train.
Emergency workers were actively working at the scene in the early hours of Tuesday morning. A KAI spokesperson told local television that at least two people remained trapped alive in the wreckage as rescuers worked to reach them. Footage shown on local media displayed passengers on medical trolleys near the station, with images showing rescuers attempting to free people from mangled train carriages.
Sausan Sarifah, 29, a survivor admitted to RSUD Bekasi hospital with a broken arm and a deep cut to one thigh, described the moments after the collision. She was on her way home from work when her train stopped at Bekasi Timur Station. "I thought I was going to die," she said from her hospital bed, recounting how the long-distance train slammed into her stationary commuter train, trapping people inside.
KAI expressed its condolences to the victims and their bereaved families. The final number of casualties remained subject to confirmation as rescue operations continued.
