The drone impacted the beach during peak summer hours when hundreds of families were swimming and sunbathing. Video footage verified by international outlets including the BBC and El País showed the unmanned aerial vehicle crashing into the beach and detonating, creating an explosion and blast wave across the sand. Beachgoers captured footage of the impact as dozens of people fled the water seeking shelter.
Air raid sirens did not activate before the strike, leaving the crowded beach unprepared for the attack. Russian media reported that the drone may have been intercepted by Russian air defenses before impact, though the exact circumstances remain unclear.
Alexey Bogodistov, mayor of Gelendzhik, confirmed details of the incident. The local government press department stated via Telegram that among the four initial fatalities reported was at least one minor, with additional deaths confirmed in subsequent updates.
