Zambia's Hichilema wins second presidential term with 60 percent

Zambia's President Hakainde Hichilema has won re-election for a second term, according to results released by the electoral commission in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Hichilema received roughly 60 percent of valid votes, compared with 38 percent for his main challenger, Brian Mundubile, the commission announced.

The election, held on August 13, was marred by allegations of fraud. Observers reported incidents of intimidation and violence during the voting process. The electoral commission suspended vote counting at one point, citing violence.

This was Hichilema's seventh run for the presidency. He was widely expected to win the race prior to the election.
