Italy has extradited an accused Chinese hacker to the United States on charges related to the alleged theft of vaccine research during the COVID-19 pandemic, Italian authorities said Monday.
The suspect was arrested in Milan in July 2025 on suspicion of conducting cyberattacks against universities and other institutions engaged in COVID-related research. Italian National Police described him as a "dangerous foreign hacker" in a statement announcing the extradition.
According to Italian police, the suspect and his co-conspirators allegedly exploited cybersecurity flaws in email software to target thousands of computers. The campaign was part of a Chinese state-sponsored cyber-espionage operation dubbed "Hafnium," authorities said.
