Two New York City police officers were placed under investigation after videos surfaced online showing them repeatedly punching, kicking and dragging a man during an arrest attempt on Tuesday afternoon in Brooklyn.

Both officers work in the Narcotics Bureau in Brooklyn. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced Wednesday that the officers had been stripped of their guns and shields and placed on desk duty. The Department's Internal Affairs Bureau, which investigates reports of police misconduct, opened an inquiry into the incident.

In a statement on social media, Ms. Tisch described the videos as "deeply disturbing."

The Police Department said the officers had mistakenly targeted the wrong man while executing an undercover drug operation in the Cobble Hill section of Brooklyn on Tuesday afternoon. The incident was captured in multiple recordings that circulated online.

A witness at the scene called for the officers to be arrested, according to reports. The beating occurred inside a store in the neighborhood, with the confrontation visible to bystanders.

The investigation by Internal Affairs is ongoing. No further details about potential charges or disciplinary measures have been announced.
