Kylian Mbappé trained at Real Madrid's Valdebebas facility on a scheduled rest day for the entire squad, posting images on social media in what officials said was a response to fan concerns about his commitment and form.

The 27-year-old striker has not appeared in a competitive match since April 24, when he sustained a hamstring injury during a 1-1 draw against Real Betis. According to Spanish media outlet Marca, Mbappé is targeting a return this week, either for Thursday's home fixture against Oviedo or Sunday's away match at Sevilla.

Mbappé's absence was particularly notable during Sunday's Clásico at Barcelona, where Real Madrid lost 2-0 and Barcelona secured a second consecutive La Liga title. The forward watched the match from his home in Madrid and posted an Instagram Story during the game, which drew some controversy among supporters.

Real Madrid officials have expressed uncertainty about whether Mbappé will play again this season. Club vice president Álvaro Arbeloa stated after the Barcelona match that he does not know if the forward will return to action before the campaign concludes.

The French international has recorded 47 goals and 8 assists across 47 appearances this season. He remains in contention to finish as the leading scorer in both La Liga and the Champions League, despite Real Madrid's elimination from the latter competition in the quarter-finals.

Fan criticism of Mbappé has intensified throughout the season, with supporters questioning his commitment both on and off the pitch. The striker has missed 11 matches in 2026 compared to only one between August and December 2025, when he was sidelined for a Champions League group-stage fixture against Manchester City.

Real Madrid's management is reportedly considering José Mourinho as a potential managerial appointment to address the squad's performance issues. The club has now gone two consecutive seasons without winning a major trophy, and individual players including Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, and Jude Bellingham have faced jeers and whistles from the Bernabéu crowd during matches this term.

The upcoming match against Oviedo on Thursday will be closely watched to gauge the Bernabéu's reaction following the Barcelona defeat and to determine whether Mbappé will be available for selection.
