Seattle Reign FC captain Jess Fishlock announced Tuesday that she will retire at the conclusion of the 2026 NWSL season, ending a 14-year career with the club that began when the league launched in 2013.

Fishlock, 39, is the last remaining player from Seattle's original roster. She is one of only three active players remaining from the NWSL's inaugural season, alongside Chicago Stars goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher and Angel City FC forward Sydney Leroux, but the only one to have played that entire span with a single team.

"It's hard to put into words what Seattle and this club mean to me," Fishlock said in a statement. "This is where I've grown, where I've fought, where I've experienced some of the best moments of my career. We've built something that goes far beyond football, and I'm so proud to have been a part of it from day one. I'll never take for granted the people, the fans and the city that have supported me through it all, and I'm going to give everything I have in this final season."

The timing of the announcement carries significance. Tuesday marks the 13th anniversary of Fishlock's first NWSL goal, scored on April 21, 2013. The club celebrated the 13th anniversary of its inaugural match on April 14.

During her tenure with Seattle, Fishlock has scored 49 goals, the second most in club history. She has helped the Reign win three NWSL Shields in 2014, 2015, and 2022, and appeared in three NWSL Championship games in 2014, 2015, and 2023. She was named the 2021 NWSL MVP.

Fishlock announced her retirement from international play in October 2025. She holds the record as Wales' all-time leader in caps with 166 appearances and 48 international goals across both the women's and men's national programs. She was the first Welsh player ever to reach 100 appearances for the national team.

In club history, Fishlock ranks second in starts with 205 appearances and third in minutes played with 17,785. She is also the oldest woman ever to score at a European Championship, having netted a goal against France during Euro 2025 at age 38.

During her career, Fishlock has played for clubs across multiple continents, including Glasgow, AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands, Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City in Australia, and others before her extended tenure in Seattle.

The Reign's inaugural roster included other notable players who have since departed. Winger Megan Rapinoe retired in 2023, and defender Lu Barnes departed last season.
