Todd Lyons, the acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said Thursday that he would resign at the end of May, effective May 31.

In a letter to Markwayne Mullin, the homeland security secretary, Lyons cited family reasons for his departure. "My sons are both reaching a pivotal point in their lives, and my wife and I wish to spend as much time as possible with them," Lyons wrote in the letter, reviewed by The New York Times. "This was not an easy decision, but I believe it is the right one for me and my family at this time."

Lyons also described his tenure leading the agency as "a tremendous honor." He has served with ICE for 20 years, according to reports.

Mullin responded with a statement thanking Lyons for his service. "Thanks to his leadership, American communities are safer," the homeland security secretary said.

Lyons will remain in his position through the transition period until his departure takes effect. His exit comes as ICE, the agency responsible for carrying out President Trump's mass deportation campaign, has faced scrutiny over its aggressive tactics and declining public opinion.
