Residents of New York City's East Village filed a lawsuit Monday against Mayor Zohran Mamdani in an attempt to stop the relocation of homeless men to a new shelter in their neighborhood, according to court filings.

The lawsuit requests a restraining order to halt the opening of the shelter, which is scheduled to begin operations May 1. Plaintiffs characterized the opening timeline as "rushed," according to reporting on the case.

City Hall selected the location along Third Street as one of two intake shelters in Manhattan. The facility is designed to house homeless men relocated to the neighborhood as part of the city's shelter system expansion.

The legal challenge reflects ongoing community opposition to the shelter's placement. Residents have raised concerns about the facility's impact on the neighborhood, prompting the court action to block or delay its opening.

Mayor Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul have previously advocated for increased housing construction in New York City, which faces a severe housing shortage and lengthy regulatory delays before projects can proceed. Their "Let Them Build" agenda has focused on expanding housing options across the city.

The case was filed in Manhattan Supreme Court. A judge has not yet ruled on the restraining order request as of Thursday.
