The BBC asked a U.S. court for help in obtaining documents and testimony from members of President Donald Trump's family in connection with his $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the British broadcaster, according to a court document filed Friday in federal court in Florida.
Lawyers for the BBC argued that Ivanka Trump, her husband Jared Kushner, and Donald Trump Jr. have "personal knowledge" and likely possess records relevant to elements of Trump's claims against the broadcaster. The filing detailed the BBC's difficulty in serving subpoenas to the three individuals, citing their Secret Service protection and other security personnel surrounding them.
Trump filed the lawsuit in December, seeking $10 billion in damages from the BBC. The suit accuses the broadcaster of defamation as well as deceptive and unfair trade practices. The allegations center on reporting by the BBC regarding Trump's conduct and statements.
The BBC's court filing is an effort to compel testimony and document production from Trump family members who the broadcaster contends have relevant information to the case. The inability to serve subpoenas through conventional means prompted the BBC to seek judicial assistance in accessing the testimony and records it deems necessary for its defense.
