Two police officers who defended the U.S. Capitol during the January 6, 2021, riot filed a civil lawsuit Tuesday to block a $1.776 billion "Anti-Weaponization" fund established by the Department of Justice, alleging the fund amounts to unlawful use of taxpayer money to reward rioters and Trump allies.

The plaintiffs are Harry Dunn, a retired U.S. Capitol Police officer, and Daniel Hodges, an active officer with the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington. They filed the complaint in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C.

The fund was created as part of a DOJ settlement of a lawsuit brought by President Donald Trump, his eldest sons, and The Trump Organization over the leak of tax information by an IRS employee. According to the complaint, the fund is designed to compensate Trump allies who claim they were victims of prosecutorial overreach.

In their suit, the officers allege that Trump has "created a $1.776 billion taxpayer-funded slush fund to finance the insurrectionists and paramilitary groups that commit violence in his name." The complaint characterizes the action as "the most brazen act of presidential corruption this century."

The officers' lawsuit challenges the fund's legality and its stated purpose of compensating individuals connected to Trump who assert they faced improper prosecution or investigation.
