Sen. Mitch McConnell on Sunday released a statement and photograph breaking weeks of silence about his health, revealing that a fall led to his hospitalization on June 14.
The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican said he was "briefly unconscious" around the time he was first taken to the hospital. He underwent a battery of tests to determine what caused the fall. McConnell said his doctors confirmed he did not break any bones, suffer a concussion, have a heart attack or stroke, or have any tumors or hemorrhages.
McConnell disclosed that he also contracted a mild case of pneumonia while receiving care. He has since been moved to a rehabilitation facility, where he said he is "regaining my strength." He indicated he will not be returning to the Senate "quite yet."
The statement addressed the extended absence that had prompted mounting speculation about his condition. "You all know how folks of my generation often hesitate to share the vulnerability that comes with growing older," McConnell said. "Even in the public eye, I feel that same instinct — I can't help it."
McConnell attributed his mobility challenges to childhood polio, which he said has made managing physical demands more difficult with age. "Last month, I took a fall which landed me in the hospital," he stated.
The photograph released alongside the statement showed McConnell sitting in a hospital bed with his wife, Elaine Chao, holding a copy of Sunday's Washington Post. Both were smiling in the image.
Emergency medical personnel had responded to McConnell's home on June 14, according to a public EMS dispatch call. Initial reports indicated dispatchers suspected a cardiac event, though McConnell's statement ruled out heart-related causes.
McConnell's statement came one day after the unexpected death of fellow Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, who died of heart issues at age 71.
McConnell, the former Senate Republican majority leader, is serving out his last term in Congress. His office had provided minimal updates on his condition during the weeks following his hospitalization, saying only that he was continuing to improve and working with his staff.
