Russian President Vladimir Putin oversaw a scaled-back Victory Day parade on Red Square on Saturday, addressing thousands of soldiers and foreign dignitaries gathered to commemorate the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.
In his speech, Putin stated that "Victory has always been and will be ours," emphasizing what he described as Russia's moral strength and unity. He told the assembled crowd that "the key to success is our moral strength, courage and valor, our unity and ability to endure anything and overcome any challenge."
Putin drew a direct connection between the historical victory of 1945 and current military operations. "The great feat of the generation of victors inspires the warriors carrying out the tasks of the special military operation today," he said, using the Kremlin's preferred term for its military campaign in Ukraine. He characterized Russian soldiers as "confronting an aggressive force armed and supported by the entire NATO bloc," adding that "despite this, our heroes move forward."
The parade was notably smaller than traditional Victory Day celebrations. Images broadcast on state television showed formations of soldiers carrying the Russian flag into the square, with thousands of troops participating in the May 9 event. The parade took place under heavy security, reflecting mounting concerns about potential Ukrainian attacks and growing public fatigue with the ongoing conflict.
Later on Saturday, Putin attended a ceremonial reception at the Kremlin honoring foreign and distinguished guests. At the gathering, he proposed a toast "to the victorious generation, to the triumph of truth and justice. To the friendship and prosperity of countries and peoples. Happy holiday to you, dear friends, happy Victory Day!" The Russian president personally approached all guests attending the reception and raised glasses with each of them. Attendees included Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and leaders of Commonwealth of Independent States countries.
In earlier remarks, Putin stressed that Russia "sacredly honors the legacy and commandments of the soldiers of Victory" and emphasized the importance of preserving memory of World War II events. He noted that Russia remembers "the unparalleled resilience of soldiers during the Great Patriotic War, the selflessness of the people's militias, and the enormous efforts made on the home front."
The Victory Day parade occurs annually on May 9 and marks Russia's commemoration of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in 1945. The event is considered one of Russia's most important national holidays.
