Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg on Monday, with the Russian leader pledging support for Iran amid ongoing regional tensions.

During the meeting, Putin told Araghchi that he hoped for peace soon and that Iran would navigate the "difficult period" of war. According to Russia's state news agency RIA, Putin said: "For our part, we will do everything that serves your interests, the interests of all the people of the region, so that peace can be achieved as soon as possible."

Araghchi arrived in Russia following diplomatic visits to mediators Pakistan and Oman, where he discussed the Middle East conflict. Peace efforts between Tehran and Washington remain on hold, according to officials.

Moscow has maintained its position as an ally of Iran while resisting being drawn directly into the Middle East conflict, continuing instead with its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The meeting between Putin and Araghchi represents a continuation of diplomatic engagement between the two countries on regional security matters.
