Brandon Clarke, forward for the Memphis Grizzlies, died Monday at age 29. His agency Priority Sports announced the death Tuesday via social media.
Clarke's death is being investigated as a possible overdose, according to authorities. Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical emergency call at his apartment in Los Angeles shortly after 5 p.m. local time Monday.
The Grizzlies released a statement expressing their grief. "We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke," the team said. "Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten. We express our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time."
Clarke was born in Vancouver on September 19, 1996. He played college basketball at San Jose State before transferring to Gonzaga in 2017. At Gonzaga, he averaged 16.9 points per game and was named to the Associated Press and Sporting News All-America teams. He helped lead the Gonzaga squad to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament before the team's elimination.
The Grizzlies selected Clarke with the 21st overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft after the Oklahoma City Thunder drafted him and immediately traded his rights to Memphis. Clarke spent all seven seasons of his NBA career with the Grizzlies.
In his professional career, Clarke played 309 games, including 50 starts, and averaged 10.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. As a first-year player in 2019-20, he was named to the NBA's All-Rookie First Team.
Clarke's 2025-26 season was limited by injuries. He played in only two games after suffering a significant calf strain in March. The Grizzlies announced in March that he would miss the remainder of the season as his rehabilitation continued. He last played in December.
In April, Clarke was arrested in Arkansas on drug charges after being chased by authorities, according to CBS affiliate WREG-TV. He was released on bond. The arrest included charges of speeding and possession of a controlled substance.
The NBA Players Association also released a statement expressing condolences to Clarke's family and loved ones.
