NBA guard James Harden was arrested early Saturday morning in Houston on a misdemeanor charge of unlawful carrying of a weapon, according to Harris County court records.

Harden, 36, a Cleveland Cavaliers player and 11-time All-Star, was taken into custody at 3:41 a.m. in Harris County after police stopped his vehicle. Officers observed a handgun in plain view on the seat of his Mercedes, not holstered, according to court records. Harden confirmed ownership of the gun and was booked at Harris County Jail at 4:57 a.m.

He was released on a $100 bond less than two hours after booking. A class A misdemeanor in Texas carries a maximum sentence of one year in county jail.

Harden has a court appearance scheduled for 9 a.m. on June 22. Bond conditions prohibit him from possessing any firearms, ammunition, or other weapons, and from using, possessing, or consuming alcohol, controlled substances, dangerous drugs, or marijuana unless prescribed by a doctor. He must also submit to random urinalysis.

Harden was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers from the Los Angeles Clippers in February. In his first season with the Cavaliers, he averaged 19.2 points and 5.5 assists per game during the playoffs. The Cavaliers were eliminated in the Eastern Conference Finals last month by the New York Knicks in a sweep.

The 2017-18 NBA MVP spent nine seasons with the Houston Rockets, where he was an All-Star selection each year. He has also played for the Oklahoma City Thunder, Brooklyn Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, and Los Angeles Clippers.

Harden is potentially set to become a free agent at the end of June. He has a $42 million player option decision due by June 29, though only $13.3 million is guaranteed.

The Cleveland Cavaliers said in a statement that they were aware of the arrest and gathering additional information. The NBA has a strict policy regarding weapons use by players, and separate sanctions could be imposed independent of any judicial proceedings.
