Suni Lee announced her return to gymnastics on Tuesday in an Instagram video, approximately two years before the opening ceremony of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Lee, 23, is a six-time Olympic medalist who won gold in the all-around at the 2021 Tokyo Games. She also earned bronze on uneven bars and silver in the team competition at those games. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, she won bronze in the all-around and uneven bars, and gold with the U.S. team.
In the video posted to Instagram, Lee said, "I know what I'm capable of. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get there." The clip featured training and competition footage from her career but provided no additional details about her specific plans for the comeback.
Lee had taken a break following the 2024 Paris Olympics. She was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease two years after the Tokyo Games but competed in Paris despite the condition.
The announcement comes as other members of the 2024 Olympic gymnastics team have also signaled intentions to compete at the Los Angeles Games. Jade Carey, a gold medalist from Paris, has already returned to competition.
Lee's caption on the Instagram post read, "i'm back 🎬," and she added, "This is more than a comeback, stay tuned."
