Ukraine has sanctioned the popular Russian cartoon "Masha and the Bear" in a move to restrict the children's show, accusing its producers of spreading pro-Russian narratives and threatening Ukrainian national security.
Ukrainian Culture Minister Tetyana Berezhna announced the sanctions on Friday, stating that Ukraine has imposed measures against the producers and distributors of the Russian animated series. "The Russian propaganda has no place on the screens of children in Ukraine and anywhere else in the world," Berezhna said.
According to Berezhna, the sanctions create "a legal basis to block the content in Ukraine" and to request that international platforms restrict its monetization and distribution. The minister said the measures are designed to limit the spread of the series, which she characterized as a tool of cultural power in Moscow's hands.
The cartoon series, produced by Animaccord, has been widely distributed internationally and remains popular among children globally. Ukraine's decision to sanction the show reflects concerns about the use of cultural products to project a positive image of Russia. The bear character featured in the series is frequently used as a symbol to represent Russia.
