Liberia charges ex-Vice President Howard-Taylor with drug trafficking

Liberia's Justice Ministry announced charges against former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor on drug trafficking, money laundering and related offences. Howard-Taylor served as vice president for six years until 2024.

Authorities detained Howard-Taylor before she could board a flight to leave Liberia at Roberts International Airport in the capital, Monrovia. She was transported to national police headquarters following her arrest. Howard-Taylor has not made any public comments regarding the charges.

The charges against her include illegally importing, selling and transporting controlled drugs, as well as facilitating drug trafficking operations. Police have also charged three foreign nationals in connection with the investigation, including two Croatians.

Liberia has intensified enforcement efforts against transnational drug trafficking in recent years, with particular focus on cocaine trafficking operations. The charges against Howard-Taylor represent part of this broader crackdown by West African authorities on drug-related crimes.
