Luigi Mangione's New York state trial has been delayed following his guilty plea last week to federal charges in the 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
After entering his guilty plea and admitting to killing Thompson, Mangione's defense team filed a motion to dismiss his New York case, citing the state's double jeopardy law. Double jeopardy, a clause within the Fifth Amendment, prohibits people from being prosecuted twice for the same crime.
A judge on Monday postponed the state trial until December 10, allowing time for prosecutors and the defense to litigate the motion to dismiss. The judge ordered prosecutors to respond to the defense's motion by October 9, with the defense given until October 30 to file a reply.
Mangione pleaded guilty to federal charges of interstate stalking resulting in death and stalking through use of interstate facilities resulting in death. The state trial had been scheduled to begin at an earlier date before the postponement was announced.
