A man was shot by law enforcement near the Washington Monument on Monday afternoon after firing at officers, authorities said.
Plainclothes Secret Service agents spotted the man around 3:30 p.m. in the area near the White House complex, according to Secret Service Deputy Director Matt Quinn. The agents observed what appeared to be the imprint of a weapon on the suspect.
The shooting occurred near 15th Street and Independence Avenue. The suspect opened fire on the agents, who returned fire, officials said. The person's condition was not immediately disclosed.
The Secret Service encouraged people to avoid the area as emergency crews responded to the incident. U.S. Secret Service police and local law enforcement remained at the scene as forensics teams conducted their investigation.
Shortly after the incident, the White House was put on lockdown while assessing possible risks, which was lifted a few minutes later.
The shooting took place in a heavily secured area near the White House and the Washington Monument, two of the most protected locations in the nation's capital.
