A 15-year-old boy was killed and two other people were injured in a shooting at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow on Long Island Wednesday night, Nassau County police said.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire just before 8:30 p.m. at Field 2 of the park. The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released. The two other victims were taken to a hospital, where they underwent surgery and were listed in stable condition Thursday morning. Their names and ages were not immediately available.
Police are investigating the shooting as gang-related. Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said the incident stemmed from a gathering organized by members of the Bloods gang. An invitation circulated on social media encouraging people to meet at the park for what was described as a barbecue, according to investigators.
Authorities said a group had been grilling when an argument broke out between two individuals, leading to gunfire. Two people were allegedly found with weapons and arrested Thursday.
The park was technically closed at the time, and workers were in the process of clearing the area and locking the gates when the shooting occurred. An ambulance medic who was already in the park heard the first gunshots and ran toward the scene.
