Ander Herrera's spell at Boca Juniors came to an end Friday when the Spanish midfielder and the club announced the mutual termination of his contract. The 36-year-old recorded an emotional farewell video at an empty Bombonera stadium, where he addressed supporters and reflected on his time with the Argentine side.

"Hello Bosteros, I am here to tell you that the club and I have decided to continue this adventure in a different way: this time it will be as a fan, as a fan for the rest of my life," Herrera said in the video, wearing the Boca shirt with the stadium in the background.

Herrera had joined Boca in January 2025 as one of the most prominent signings of that transfer window. His arrival generated significant anticipation among supporters given his career trajectory, which included stints at Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, and Athletic Club. His contract was originally set to expire in December 2026.

The announcement came during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, being held in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. In his farewell message, Herrera expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent the club and wear its colors, describing it as one of the dreams he had held throughout his career.

"I want to thank the club very much for the opportunity it gave me to play here. One of the dreams I have had in my career, to have been able to represent this club," he said in the video.

Following the announcement, Herrera provided further reflection on his experience. In an interview with El Canal de Boca, he described joining the club as one of the best decisions of his life. "I never would have imagined it, even though I had it in a corner of my mind," he said, adding that he considered himself fortunate to have had the opportunity to play at the Bombonera.

"Never was that situation possible, to come to Boca, right? But one day came when I said: 'I do it now or I don't do it,'" Herrera explained regarding his decision to join the club.

Leandro Paredes, Boca's captain and World Cup winner with Argentina, sent a message to Herrera via Instagram from the Argentine national team's concentration in Kansas City ahead of their World Cup debut against Algeria on Tuesday. "I will miss you very much friend, thank you for everything," Paredes wrote, accompanying the message with blue and yellow heart emojis.

Paredes and Herrera had previously played together at Paris Saint-Germain before reuniting at Boca. Following his departure, Herrera traveled south to rest before determining his next move.
