Alexia Putellas announced Tuesday that she will leave Barcelona at the end of the season after 14 years with the Spanish club, ending one of the most significant tenures in women's football history.
The 32-year-old midfielder, who joined Barcelona's senior team in 2012 from Levante, is the club's all-time leading goalscorer with 233 goals in 507 appearances. She also ranks second in total matches played for the club.
Putellas made the announcement through a video posted to her social media accounts. "After everything, the moment has come to recognize that I have given everything for these colors, with daily and constant demand and obsession for 14 years," she said. "I am not leaving sad, it is simply a stage that is ending. I was born a culé and I will die a culé."
The midfielder will make her final appearance for Barcelona on Wednesday against Real Sociedad at the Estadi Johan Cruyff. A recognition ceremony will take place at the Spotify Camp Nou at 11 a.m. local time, with Barcelona president Rafa Yuste and president-elect Joan Laporta in attendance, along with her teammates, coaching staff, and family members.
Putellas joined Barcelona's youth academy after beginning her career in her hometown of Mollet del Vallès and playing for Sabadell. She spent time with Espanyol and Levante before returning to Barcelona in summer 2012, fulfilling a childhood dream. She attended matches at Camp Nou with her father as a young girl and witnessed the club's men's team play.
During her tenure, Putellas has won 38 trophies with Barcelona. She recently won the Champions League MVP award after the club defeated Olympique Lyonnais 4-0 on Saturday in Oslo. She holds two Ballon d'Or Féminin awards and is widely regarded as one of the best women's players of the 21st century.
Putellas renewed her contract in May 2024 for two additional seasons with an option to extend for a third year. She had recovered from an anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained with Spain's national team in June 2022. She helped Spain win the World Cup in 2023 and the Champions League in 2024.
In the 2025-26 season, Putellas appeared in 42 matches, scoring 21 goals and providing 13 assists. She will seek a new challenge outside Spain following her departure from Barcelona.
