Manuel Pellegrini has secured his place as the most accomplished manager in Real Betis history after guiding the club to Champions League qualification on May 12, following a 2-1 victory over Elche at La Cartuja.
The Chilean coach's achievement marks the club's return to European football's elite competition after a 21-year absence. Betis reached 57 points and clinched the fifth-place spot, opening a seven-point gap over sixth-placed Celta de Vigo with two matches remaining in the season.
Colombian forward 'Cucho' Hernández opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a precise individual effort. Elche, featuring Lucas Cepeda on the bench, equalized before halftime, but Betis secured the decisive goal to seal qualification.
Pellegrini's six seasons at the helm have produced an unprecedented run of consecutive European competition appearances. The club, approaching its 119th anniversary, had never before qualified for European competitions in six consecutive seasons under any previous manager.
Three Betis legends—Croatian Robert Jarni, Andalusian Juan Merino, and Uruguayan Alejandro Lembo—have publicly recognized Pellegrini as the finest technical director in the institution's history, according to statements made to La Tercera.
Eder Sarabia, manager of Elche, offered his own assessment ahead of the match. "They are a great team, with a tremendous coach who surely, as I have said before, is the best in Betis history," Sarabia said in a press conference. "I don't know how many seasons they have been getting into Europe. Manuel Pellegrini is managing to put Betis where it deserves to be," he added.
Pellegrini's tenure has transformed the Seville-based club's competitive standing. The qualification came after Betis drew 2-2 at Real Sociedad the previous weekend, a result that had temporarily extended uncertainty over their Champions League prospects. The team's response against Elche demonstrated the resolve Pellegrini has instilled, with high pressing from the opening minutes designed to disrupt Elche's buildup play from the back.
