Manchester United have proposed a contract offer to Michael Carrick for the position of permanent head coach, with talks underway following approval from co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

The initial offer is for a two-year deal as head coach, with the option of an additional season extending through 2029. Negotiations commenced after an executive committee meeting this week where chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox recommended Carrick for the full-time role.

Carrick took interim charge in January following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim. In 15 Premier League matches under his management, the club recorded 10 wins, three draws and one defeat. The improved performances lifted Manchester United from sixth place to third, securing a return to Champions League football for next season.

During his interim tenure, Carrick guided the club to victories against Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City. His appointment has been well-received internally, with positive assessments of his relationship with the squad and his conduct behind the scenes.

Carrick's backroom staff are set to remain in place, with assistant Steve Holland continuing in his role. Officials said negotiations will continue, with the possibility that a resolution could be reached before United's final home game of the season against Nottingham Forest on Sunday, allowing Carrick to sign off from Old Trafford with clarity regarding his future and providing assurance to supporters about next season's management.

The former Manchester United midfielder, who was a club idol during his playing career, replaced Amorim in the dugout in January. His interim performance has made him the favored candidate within the club's hierarchy for the permanent position.
