A two-alarm fire broke out at a deli on West 183rd Street in the Fordham section of the Bronx on Tuesday evening, damaging multiple businesses along a commercial corridor near the 183rd Street 4 train station.
The fire started around 10 p.m. at 4 West 183rd Street, between Jerome and Davidson avenues. Witnesses reported that Molotov cocktails were thrown inside the deli. The flames spread to neighboring stores, and firefighters took approximately one hour to bring the blaze under control.
More than 140 firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the scene. One man was transported to Jacobi Hospital in serious but stable condition with burn injuries. According to an account from someone who knew the victim, a man ran into the burning building to help his boss's nephew, who was working inside the deli at the time.
Video from the scene showed significant damage to the building. The fire remained active into Wednesday morning, hours after the initial outbreak. Fire marshals will determine the cause of the blaze as the investigation continues.
