A three-alarm fire broke out Monday morning at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre on Broadway, prompting a full evacuation and a vacate order from the Department of Buildings.

The fire started around 10 a.m. in the electrical room located between the fourth and fifth floors of the theater. Firefighters responded and initially knocked down the blaze, but additional fire was discovered in an area between the fifth floor and the roof.

FDNY Assistant Chief David Simms described the fire as "deep seated" and "very difficult to get to." He said units entered the building, conducted a search, and aggressively fought the fire. "After the fire was knocked down, more fire was discovered in an area between floors five and the roof," Simms stated.

One firefighter sustained a minor injury during the response, according to Simms. All occupants were safely removed from the theater.

The Eugene O'Neill Theatre is home to performances of "The Book of Mormon." No performances were scheduled for Monday at the time of the fire. The theater's operator, Ambassador Theater Group, said in a statement that "everyone has been safely removed from the theater" and that they would "keep all parties abreast of this developing situation." The timing and location of future performances remain unclear pending the outcome of the investigation and repairs.

The Department of Buildings' full vacate order means the theater cannot be occupied until it has been inspected and cleared for reentry.
