NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani partnered with NJ/NY Gotham FC to provide 1,000 tickets priced at $5 to an upcoming women's soccer match. The discounted tickets sold out in under an hour, though regular-priced tickets remain available.
Mamdani ran for mayor last year on a platform centered on affordability and addressing rising costs of living. He has now extended that focus to women's soccer through the collaboration with the NWSL club.
The mayor has a history of engagement with the New York City soccer community. As part of his mayoral campaign, he hosted a free soccer tournament called the "Cost of Living Classic" last summer in partnership with NYCFooty, a large recreational soccer organization where Mamdani has also played.
In the fall, Mamdani announced a campaign titled "Game Over Greed" focused on addressing the affordability of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The campaign called on FIFA to refrain from using dynamic pricing, to cap resale prices, and to set aside tickets for residents. Several World Cup matches, including the final, are scheduled to be played in New Jersey.
Mamdani is an avid Arsenal fan. The $5 ticket initiative reflects his stated commitment to keeping football accessible to low-income city residents during a period of rising ticket prices across sports venues.
