New Jersey Transit has proposed special event pricing for round-trip rail tickets from Pennsylvania Station in New York City to MetLife Stadium for FIFA World Cup matches, with fares potentially reaching close to $150, according to three people familiar with the plans.

The proposed price represents a markup of more than 10 times the typical round-trip fare of $12.90 for the same 15-minute journey across the Hudson River. The route covers approximately nine miles and includes a stop at Secaucus station.

NJ Transit, New Jersey's transportation provider, discussed the pricing this week as the bistate committee overseeing World Cup arrangements prepared for matches scheduled in June and July. The Athletic reported earlier this week that price modeling had forecast fares exceeding $100 per passenger, though the latest figures suggest the final price could approach $150.

The standard $12.90 return ticket pricing was maintained during the FIFA Club World Cup final last summer. However, the World Cup special event pricing will differ from NJ Transit's usual practice of offering concessionary fares for seniors, children, and disabled passengers. According to a source with direct knowledge of the plans, the World Cup pricing will be a single blanket price applied across all passenger categories.
