Federal authorities have opened a criminal investigation into E. Jean Carroll, the former magazine columnist who accused President Trump of sexual assault, according to multiple reports.
The investigation is examining whether Carroll committed perjury in testimony given during her two civil lawsuits against Trump, officials said.
Carroll sued Trump, claiming he sexually abused her in the 1990s in a New York City department store. She filed a second lawsuit in 2019 for defamation after Trump denied the alleged assault, stating she was not his type and claiming she fabricated the account to promote her book.
In 2023, a New York jury found Trump liable for defaming Carroll and sexually abusing her, though the jury did not find him liable for rape. Carroll was awarded $5 million in damages. Trump subsequently submitted an appeal seeking a new trial, which was ultimately denied.
The criminal inquiry focuses on statements Carroll made under oath during the civil proceedings, according to the reports.
