President Donald Trump is considering construction of a helipad on the South Lawn of the White House to accommodate Marine One helicopters, according to reports published Monday.

The proposed helipad would allow the newly available VH-92A Patriot helicopters to land at the executive mansion without damaging the grass through exhaust burn. Currently, the Marine Corps flies these helicopters only when the president travels away from the White House, as their exhaust can scorch the lawn.

The Marine Corps has explored the helipad concept for years before Trump's consideration of the project. Construction could begin as early as early summer, according to reporting by The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and CNN.

The helipad would represent another renovation to the White House under Trump's tenure. Previous modifications include paving over grass in the Rose Garden and demolishing the East Wing to make way for a ballroom, along with other alterations throughout the property.

A retired military officer told The Washington Post that the helipad concept is not "a wild Trump idea," though the proposal had faced resistance in the past.
